I for one enjoy the artstyle that has been done by Lauren Faust, who also made Powerpuff Girls and Foster's Home for imaginary friends as well as how the Characters have their quirks and flaws and are not overly girly and perfect like many shows do. It also offers some really catchy songs, and I'm amazed what fans can do with this material. This, some nostalgia and the fact that the show was able to cheer me up during a bad time might be the reasons why I watch it. But that's just my opinion.

I like to think it has something to do with the show’s ability to reach a certain level of cute without crossing that line over into schmaltzy or sugary. Who among us hasn’t watched a sleeping cat video on Youtube or something equally as insipid? And as insipid as it is, it probably has 25 million views. I assume the same basic principle applies here. It’s this adorableness, partnered with the show’s unique sense of sentimentality, that has caused people to create an emotional attachment to the characters.

I also like to believe that MLP:FIM is a children’s cartoon that, unlike Pixar films, doesn’t cater to adults as well as children, but rather, caters to the children INSIDE adults.

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. You either get it, or you don’t.

Lauren Faust did not make those, it was her husband, Craig McCracken.

Correct, but she still was involved in both of those, as well as being an animator for "the iron giant"
But she was the one who brought that kinda design into the show - which was a hell of an improvement in my opinion.
